No 6. Alexander Vittouris: Ajiro

The foundation of the ‘Ajiro’ concept is to provide wholly sustainable personal mobility by reassessing production methods; considering the product lifecycle as a natural growth process. The term “grown mobility” is introduced, engaging the environment in its production phase through photosynthesis, and carbon storage till ultimate destruction. Utilising the strength and rapid growth of bamboo (Bambusa Oldhamii), it’s possible to directly intervene with shape modification of the growing plant. By adding tension to growing sections, over a reusable skeletal substructure, the plant retains the shape it’s restricted to, forming the structural basis for the velomobile without energy intensive assembly techniques.

No 5. Jonathan Liow: Solarball

Safe and accessible drinking water is one of the rarest resources on the planet. 1-in-8 people in our world don’t have access to potable water, causing nearly 80% of sickness and disease in third world regions. The Solarball is a response to this crisis. The Solarball provides up to 3 litres of drinkable water per day – enough drinking water for one adult. Using evaporation as a means of purification, the Solarball provides a smart, functional and efficient design solution to a worldwide problem.

No 4. Ed Linacre: AirDrop Irrigation – Highly Commended Prize

Similar to the precious concept, the Airdrop irrigation concept is a response to poor agricultural conditions in periods of severe drought. Moisture is harvested out of the air to irrigate crops by an efficient system that produces large amounts of condensation. A turbine intake drives air underground through a network of piping that rapidly cools the air to the temperature of the soil where it reaches 100% humidity and produces water. The water is then stored in an underground tank and pumped through to the roots of crops via sub surface drip irrigation hosing.

No 3. Christina Heggie: Mass Rescue Board – Bronze Prize

The Mass Rescue Board incorporates a number of innovations into the iconic surf rescue board. Compact self-inflating tubes stowed on the board allow a single lifesaver to quickly stabilise mass-rescue situations. Non-critical patients remain safely afloat while the most critical patient is returned to shore on the board, maximising the chance of successful medical treatment. The addition of a replaceable tail guard solves a major durability issue caused by existing boards being dragged through sand – the most ergonomic method of carrying the board. This greatly extends product service life, easing financial strain on surf lifesaving clubs.
