A popular candy treat that many of us loved as kids was the gummy, sugary Fruit Roll-Ups. Even kids these days still seem to love it. While they were some of the most coveted lunch treats, they amount of sugar and artificial ingredients added held a high percentage. In fact, the strawberry Fruit by the Foot actually contained no real strawberries, but strawberry flavoured syrup and colouring.
If you are looking to be able to enjoy the fun-to-eat-format of Fruit Roll-Ups in a healthier way with real fruits, this DIY recipe by Inhabitat.com’s Yuka Yoneda requires only one ingredient (your fruit/s choice) to make your own home-made fruit leather.
To make your own fruit leather, you will need: a fruit, a baking sheet lined with a non-stick liner such as a parchment paper, an oven, and a spatula to spread the fruit across the baking sheet in the pan.
The first thing you will need to do is to preheat your oven to 180 degrees Farenheit. Afterwards you will need to purée the fruit/s in a food processor or a blender to make a slightly thick paste.
Once you have blended the fruits, you will need to pour out your fruit paste onto your non-stick baking sheet and spread it into a thin layer that is about 1/4?- 1/2? thick. The edges of the mixture will tend to dry out more quickly so you might want to make them slightly thicker than the middle.
Afterwards, place it in the oven and bake for about 3 – 3 1/2 hours. Your fruity fruit roll-ups should be ready to eat after this time has passed and you have sliced them into strips.
