Humans are not really in competition with sharks of course, but if we were it would be no contest – we are the far more nefarious species. Moreover the method by which many sharks are hunted – finning causes unnecessary suffering and pain. Shark finning continues because it is profitable – a single fin can fetch $10,000 to $20,000. Up to 70 million sharks are killed in this way every year. Meanwhile, 30 percent of shark species are threatened or near-threatened with extinction.
