Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia has recently announced the expected time-frame that they will be continuing to support the Symbian operating system on their handsets…
The time period was revealed by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop; he announced the news in an interview with Nokia Conversations. Nokia have already started to move away from the operating system; they have recently announced a deal with software giant Microsoft, resulting in the production of the Windows 7 phone.
Despite the move, Symbian devices are expected to be running dry within the very near future, although users will be able to approach Nokia concerning support of the Symbian model phones until 2016.
We’re in a period where the investment in Symbian absolutely continues. Even as we go through a transition towards our primary smartphone platform, Windows Phone, you’ll see that continued investment.” said Mr Elop.
“I know there have been questions about how long does that continue, and we’ve now been very clear about that, software updates to Symbian devices are expected at least until 2016.”
“So there’s a long history still to be paved for Symbian in the future,” added Mr Elop.
The news has been welcomed by Symbian operating system users, who have been worried in recent months amidst rumours that Nokia would be ditching its support of the platform very soon.
Many Nokia users have already expressed their relief at the extended mileage their fans have been given. Nokia believe that they will be able to sell 150 million handset running Symbian before the devices become obsolete; though some critics have branded this as wishful thinking, given that there are only currently 200 million handsets running the soon-to-be-antiquated operating system.
