15th Century Flemish Style Portraits Recreated In Airplane Lavatory

Nina Katchadourian found herself with a problem many of us face – she had too much time on her hands on long flights. Instead of watching a movie or dosing off though, she decided to recreate art in the airplane’s toilet. Using just the materials at her disposal and her mobile phone, the artist was able to snap self-portraits in the same style of Flemish Renaissance portraits. She made several trips to the bathroom on long transatlantic flights – and the result is  ‘Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style’ – part of a larger project called Seat Assignment that began two years ago, and involves making art while in flight, using only the artist’s phone and what she can find around her.
