Tigers are known as fierce and scary predators of the wild, but a 57-year-old woman in Orlando, Florida actually treats two fully grown tigers as her very own feline pets as if they were nothing but small, cuddly kittens.
Janice Haley quit her administrative job in 1995 and followed her passion of caring for exotic animals by taking a course on tiger training. As of today, her Bengal tigers, 12-year-old Janda and 7-year-old Saber (the white tiger) weigh in at 400 and 600 pounds respectively. Both tigers live in a very spacious enclosure in Janice’s backyard and are even hand fed with raw meat 3 times a day.
As far as they’re concerned, I am mommy. They rub me in the face, they’ll let me kiss them on the nose. People who considered it cruel to keep them in captivity have a point, to a point. It is not the ideal place for a tiger to be, in a cage. But at this point, in the wild, there isn’t a lot hope out there for them anymore, and if there aren’t some of them left in cages, there aren’t going to be any left at all in a couple of years from now. They are provided for and loved here. In my opinion, I wouldn’t mind being a tiger in my backyard.
