7 Italian Liner Andrea Doria, 1956

  • Date of Ship Wreck: The most famous Italian Liner wreck dates back to July 1956.
  • Place of Wreck: The Wreck took place at the coast Massachusetts.
  • Goods carried: It was the most luxurious ships of its kind and was facilitated with modern features. There are no evidences about the exact amount of loss and the goods present in it.
  • Cause of Wreck: The wreck happened when the luxurious flagship of the Italian Line collided with the Swedish liner Stockholm in heavy fog off the coast of Massachusetts. The Blame was placed on both the captains because they misinterpret what their counterpart is doing.
  • Loss of Human Life: It was big disaster and claimed 46 lives.
  • Economic Loss: It was definitely a humongous economic disaster for the Italy.
  • Salvage: No efforts were made to redeem the wreckage.

6 German Liner Wilhelm Gustloff, 1945

  • Date of Ship Wreck: The Ship was destroyed in the year 1945.
  • Place of Wreck: The Wreckage took place near the northern Poland.
  • Goods carried: It was war ship, armed and loaded with highly powerful and deadly weapons of its time.
  • Cause of Wreck: The Russian Submarine was the slayer of the German liner Wilhelm Gustloff.
  • Loss of Human Life: 10,000 people were jammed onboard the ship, with a mere 900 or so managing to be rescued from the frigid waters, making it the greatest loss of life from a single ship sinking in history.
  • Economic Loss: It was marked as the huge disaster in history due to the human life losses.
  • Salvage: No records were found to salvage the wreckage.

5 American Battleship U.S.S. Maine, 1898

  • Date of Ship Wreck: The Ship Wreck took place in the year February 1898.
  • Place of Wreck: The wreck takes place in the Havana harbor.
  • Goods carried: It was carrying coal bin and ammunition.
  • Cause of Wreck: It was stated that a mine got attached to the ship which was the sole cause for the blast and the ammunition present acted as catalyst for further blasts.
  • Loss of Human Life: The wreck claimed 261 lives.
  • Economic Loss: The ammunition present and the destruction of the ship provided a huge economic loss.
  • Salvage: It was raised from the muck of Havana harbor in 1911 and towed out to open ocean, where it was sunk on purpose with full military honors.

4 German Battleship Bismarck, 1941

  • Date of Ship Wreck: The massive German Dreadnaught sank in the year 1941.
  • Place of Wreck: The great battle ship Bismarck for whom the Sir Winston Churchill said, “a master piece of naval construction” in the year 1941 during the World War II.
  • Cause of Wreck: The British battleships King George V and Rodney, gave the ultimate fight to the heavily armed German battle ship the fight lasted for many hours ultimately Bismarck surrendered to the onslaught and slipping to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Loss of Human Life: The loss claimed 115 of her 2,200 man, crew down with her.
  • Economic Loss: It was a great loss, since it was an indeed essential and vital part of naval force asset of Germany.
  • Salvage: The ship’s precise location remained largely a mystery until 1989, when she was located by Dr. Robert Ballard and his team using side-scan sonar and submersibles. The Ship is still not salvaged due to her heavy armor and weapons.
