10 Worst Computer Viruses

No 6. Melissa

Melissa was found in 1999 and was written David L. Smith in Aberdeen Township, New Jersey; he named the virus after a lap dancer he encountered in Florida. Melissa spread through Microsoft Word 97 and Word 2000. What the virus would do was that it would use a mass e-mail process where it would access the first 50 entries from a user’s address book in Outlook when the document was opened. Melissa would then randomly insert quotes from the show “The Simpsons” into documents on the host computer, maybe David L. Smith thought it was funny. And it also deleted critical Windows files. Unsurprisingly the virus was also known as Simpsons. This virus was responsible for over a billion dollar is losses.

No 5. ILOVEYOU

Also known as LoveLetter, this particular computer virus was able to infect tens of millions of computers running windows. It would appear in inboxes in the year 2000 as an email containing the subject line ‘ILOVEYOU’ and an attachment “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs”. When opened, the virus would send itself to everyone in your address book and also do a number of malicious changes to your system. The virus was so widespread that it infected ten percent of all internet-connected computers during its tenure and caused $5.5 billion to $8.7 billion in damages.
