This is ridiculous, the UK royal navy should be at least the third most powerful navy in the world, it’s been dominating the oceans since the 17th century and it’s still one of the greatest and the most pretigious navy.

The royal navy in ww2 was by far the largest with over 900 battleships. Since then completely gone down hill with only 7 Destroyers and 17 frigates. But it does own some ballistic missile submarines and nuclear submarines that could scrap the pieces of tin the indian navy uses. Number 5 for me.

This list seems to be based on the number of personnel in the respective navies. This explains why the Royal UK Navy is not listed, because they have around 38,000 personnel currently.
Everyone has a right of choice and yes this list is based on statistics as the title of the article sugegsts

How come Japan, that has four times as many naval warships as Great Britain is not mentioned on this list?
The topic is about largest navy, and I respect the result and comment by every one, but at the same time I had a doubt except us navy all other navies having only one air craft carrier? Why ? Is that any limitation for them or what? And I’m here to warn two navies on behalf of Indian people, 1st the Sri lankan navy- I think they get bored by killing innocent ellam tamils so now they started to kill Indian fishermen stop this immediately unless u guys will face the trouble. Not by out great Indian navy for cowards like u even a child playing with paper ship can destroy your whole fleet….. dont know about the present .but i believe only time will tell who is the most power ful naval force in the world cause technology is not every thing . u do need courage to start and end a war and as the Irak and the afgan war shows U.S.A doesnt have the edge in that regard.it can start a war but cant win it.

Some of you Americans really are stupid. The Royal Navy is the third most powerful but not the 3rd largest. For example, South Korea have a larger navy but Britain recently had 3 medium carriers with two supercarriers currently being built(type Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers into wikipedia)Britain also has the best fleet of nuclear powered submarines and a large helicopter carrier as well as many other destroyers, frigates etc…
Size is not everything
To be realistic as on today in case of any visible armed conflict there are just four nations 1.USA (Big Daddy of all) 2.RUSSIA(Rogue and Hardened) 3.CHINA(Knows very well how to make the world dance to its tune) 4.INDIA(Size and manpower of an emerging economy does matter). These are the only four capable on a standalone basis to wreck havoc on any other nations on the planet pound for pound.
Talking UK,France,and other european powers they simply don’t have the balls to go out alone on a war in this century and would gracefully hide behind the congregational forces such as NATO or some other EU agreed central force seeking support of USA/RUSSIA.
About Far Eastern Nations,China/India will just deep Fry them.
LOL brits are living in the past ..ha ha ha GO search the web …for some info …as of now only the US navy is blue water navy (French and UK navy are also but i don’t consider ‘em )in the world ( capable of conducting operations far away from their country) while the Brits and the French navy are just kinda partners with US navy in every mission other wise these countries alone can’t carry navy missions far far away from their countries .. remove UK from USA alliance and then from European Union ..what is left is a country that lacks enough fire power to contain china or even India thats the reason they are ranked behind according to global fire power ..GET IT IGNORANT BRITS XD

in reply to HA HA HA comments, if the UK navy cant conduct missions far from home, overseas on there own etc etc then how comes they were able to send an amphibious battle fleet thousands of miles into hostile waters to retake the falklands islands???? a rocky wind swept shit hole near antartica with more sheep than people!! does that not show determination? balls? planning?? skill?? bravery?? to successfully do wat they did on argentinas doorstep with land based air craft able to strike at will,and your supply line thousands of miles long is nothing short of pure proffesionalism and a sign of a tite elite force!! does Britain not have a carribbean squadron who intercepts tons of cocaine heading for the US?? have they not launched cammando raids from the fleet to successfully free hostages in africa?? have they not launched aircraft and missiles to enforce evil regimes in Serbia,iraq,lybia,kosovo,afghanistan into submission lately?? they patrol the horn of africa keeping sea lanes free of somali pirates, and countless other things we dont know off!!
