Top 10 Reasons to Buy MAC over PC

If there is one debate that the geeks can never manage to settle, it is MAC vs PC. I can’t settle this issue either, but I can give you geeks more reasons to argue, with this list of top 10 reasons to buy Mac over PC. So, here goes…

No 10. Sleek and stylish design

The thing noticeable from the very first look; its exterior. Every MAC is very stylishly crafted and hence is more appealing, a great choice to impress your friends.

No 9. Increasing number of software

Whoever thinks that MACs still lack software, probably is a hardcore, close-minded PC supporter. There are many impressive software in the pipeline for MACs and many interesting, beautiful and easy to use software are in the market already.

    Hello,

Nice post. I would like to ask : what is the software illustrated in reason no. 6? It seems very interesting!

  3. Anonyzious says:

    @brieucadam
    it is IMagePhone Pro.

  4. A person says:

Hah, there are pretty well three levels of operating systems. To summarize, they fall into novice, intermediate and expert. This is in regards to the users, not the software. Mac appeals to novice users, everything is very straight forward, narrow, isolated and linear. Windows is intermediate, things can be a little complicated, but for every complication you have that many more options in what you can do with your hardware and software (think about apps and jailbreaking an iphone and how restrictive mac is with their products). And then there is expert level, linux. Much of this can be said about linux that you may have said about mac, however there is a few huge and very important ideas here.
Linux is generally free and open source. What this means is the operating system is developed by people who are working for free. Some might take this as some form of ‘low class’ operating system. This is just their bias speaking. The pitfalls in paid for software are numerous. Paid for software will be developed just enough to sell well. Updates that should be released immediately are always held for some time in order to create a sort of ‘upgrade’ package that can be sold. I could write on, but I don’t really care to. Generally I am a windows user, I enjoy linux at times and it has fantastic uses such as web development and server operations but, just like mac, it is difficult and often impossible to get some programs going that I need.
Macs aren’t special, they use the same hardware and other computer would, there is only one difference, cost. Mac wants to charge you, at least, double what the hardware is worth for no good reason.

  5. mac says:

MAC? really? Reasons to not use it: expensive, for fags and a pc can do everthing a mac do and more.

  6. Rob says:

Hahaha… that’s quite a funny piece, not all of those points are valid reasons for buying a mac over a PC.

  7. Nick S. says:

OK, as a user of both Mac and WIndows, I gotta give my 2 cents. I have each point listed below.
    10. Sleek & Stylish
OK, I agree with this one.
    9. Increasing Number of Software
Yeah, been increasing for the last 15 years! And STILL hasn’t come close to the number of titles available for Windows.
    8. Simpler WIreless Networking
Really? Ever used Windows 7? MUCH easier!
    7. Wikipedia Integration
IMO, this would be a reason NOT to get it. YOu wouldn’t buy text book based on WIkipedia would you?
    6. iPhone
Um, so you think I should shell out big bucks for a Mac just to have better integration with my phone? Thats a stretch.
    5. Spring loaded Folders
Again, a nifty feature, but not worth the big bucks for the initial investment.
    4. No need for file shredders
Hmmm, total BS. If it was on the HD, and you know what your doing, NOTHING is ever truly deleted.
    3. No HD fragmentation
    Kind of agree
    2. Fewer Viruses
Wait for it, mark my words, they are coming. And with the way Apple has proven with recent events, they won’t handle it nearly as well as other OS’s
    1. iLife
Again, a piece of software is NOT worth the initial investment of the hardware

  8. Ben says:

the fact that you are struggling to come up with good reasons to buy a mac over a pc should really tell you something

  9. Lucas says:

1 reason not to buy a MAC.

    No games.

Also this a pretty despicable list.

  10. arvind says:

Are u getting paid by apple for this? Mac is lousy, just like Apple.

  11. Obvitroll says:

Mac SuckS! Too god damn expensive for too little functionality.
No virus? just wait until they appear. Won’t be too long.

  12. Dan says:

ok, where do I start? in my old elementary school, NONE OF THE MAC COMPUTERS worked. they were EXTREMELY slow. on the other hand, the Dell win2000 computers worked perfectly. i’m too professional to use a mac, and they are so expensive. $300 PC vs $3000 mac. they are way too “stylish” as well. my biggest issue with macs: emulators. most emulators these days are for windows or linux. I actually use Arch Linux as my main operating system on my Netbook, with windows when I need it. That is way better than a mac.
iPhone: *sigh* why would you have an iphone in the first place?
software: what software? only 3 out of the 50 games I have support mac, and 4 out of like 20 programs. java programs work on everything, though.
viruses: they usually come with pirated software, cracks, keygens, and etc.
spring loaded folders: what the hell? that is so inefficient. “cp /home/daniel/file_a /home/daniel/file_b && rm /home/daniel/file_a” in linux does the trick much faster.

THE MOUSE!!! I HATE THE MOUSE!!! there is only one mouse button on apple’s mighty mouse. its great that macs support other mice.

  13. Windoze says:

    Apple: Pay more, Get less.

  14. Walter says:

I’m a filmmaker. Who has done tech support before and runs both Windows and Mac all the time

    1. Final Cut Pro (Honestly, the only reason why I got a mac)
    2. I found I spent less time troubleshooting my mac whereas sometimes when using the PC there would be a glitch that I would spend an hour or two solving before getting to the job I was working on. On the mac I just got on and did the job.
    3. Having both a PC and a Mac I am less likely to even try to find games for my mac.
    4. I love using spaces and expose (I wish I could find a program that emulated it on the PC that ran as smoothly)
    5 The no Defrag Thing
6 An Intel Mac can run Windows software using a program like Crossover. You can also duel boot as a Windows System.
    7. My 5 year old Mac, with no OS reinstalls or hardware updates still runs fast as opposed to my parent’s high end PC laptops they bought last year that they call me to work on all the damn time.
8 When sharing through my router between computers The Mac works every time and my PC sometimes has to be tweaked until it works despite having done it hundreds of times.
9 No Registry and if a program does jam up then when I force quit it the system memory is clean and ready to use without a reboot. PC I can run maybe 2 days before it needs a reboot. Ran a mac for a month solid without the need for a reboot.
10 Antivirus, Adware and Spyware protection doesn’t eat up my system resources.

Having said all that, what I like about the Mac is OSX and Final Cut Pro which are software not hardware. Apple says it is a Hardware company and not a software company so it makes really good software that is exclusive to its hardware. It’s hardware is essentially the same hardware that is in a PC packaged in a proprietary and overpriced manner. The proprietary nature makes it a bitch to swap parts and upgrade hardware without buying either a whole new machine or a much more expensive machine to begin with.

My PCs have essentially become a gaming rig, something to troubleshoot other people’s problems and a server.

So as not to sound like an Apple fanboy let me say Itunes bites, Ipod Touch and Iphone are overrated and the IPAD is dumb.

  15. Steelhound says:

And of course all the PC maggots crawl out of their caves to bitch and moan. PC’s get viruses, they suck up energy and most people just use them as bigger, more expensive gaming consoles. You PC maggots need to shut your traps and go back to your basement dwelling loser lives.

  16. Yeah another stupid MAC/PC debate. To every nazi and open-minded critic out there:

I’ll just rant about some technical stuff concerning the operating systems written above, applications are not my top priority right now so please people don’t compare apples with oranges and pears:

Windows 7 (technically into the OS architecture itself) sucks, like every Windows had sucked over the years, don’t you just get bored after using it from 3.1 and for more than 15 years?? to have a Perfect Windows (7) system you have to have the super CPU, the super GPU, 64GB DDR3 RAM, a 512GB SSD, a good paid Anti-virus (because MSE can’t do every job altogether), and download (and crack if necessary) every fucking 3rd party app you need to customize your computer to your needs, in case you disagree with the kind of bloatware the OEMs have to offer for you, to make it work just like you wish to, perfectly, and yeah because it consumes 20GB of useless disk space when you have a fresh install and NO PDF READER??? but a bunch of stupid little games??? consuming at least 1GB DDR3 RAM with the Aero lit on?? Internet Exploiter consuming all the freaking RAM when I open lots of tabs and then closing then again until only remains ONE?? give me a break!!! Windows should be the gaming machine, because OpenGL is still not as mature as the DirectX engine, which is one of the Microsoft’s strongest software to the date, including Visual Studio
which has actually good framework and good IDE, but IMO nothing is better than POSIX C/C++, D, Python and Ruby.

I’m surprised that still many industrial applications are made for Windows only or Windows like the first priority. For industrial and life-critical work the Windows OS just sucks. Windows server with no CygWin for a network sucks even more.

The optimal Windows 7, Ultimate, which can be close to the “perfect” windows system (with all of the care taken like I wrote above) is a prohibitively expensive operating system (200 USD anyone) and the shittiest ones, Starter, Home Basic and Home Premium, are just a piece of garbage which you won’t notice so much because of the OEM, don’t get me wrong, I complain because of the price of the software, because I actually own a Mac and a PC.
Comparing to a regular release of mac OS which sometimes cost up to 60 USD, and of course, Linux and BSD, where most of their distributions are free.

Linux is one of the best operating systems I’ve ever used in my life, just technically talking about the OS itself, not about the applications, it’s a really good operating system to be free (Ubuntu is starting to suck, so I recommend Linux Mint, BTW).

An Operating System with the Linux kernel it’s really stable and secure, can automatically detect and load a driver for general hardware and some exotic hardware and save you LOTS of configuration time with some package management software like apt, yum… of course there are some rootkits and malware for linux, but the way it works and the steep development made into it makes it a good choice for industrial, scientific and life-critical systems.

The actual downside with Linux and why it still does not make fit with many home users, it’s because of the nature it was made at the beginning of it’s history, because Microsoft is an oligarchic monopoly, and of course when you are out of luck and need to configure something manually (command line) can be sometimes a real PITA if something does not work out like you wish, e.g. some really exotic hardware or some other random configuration you need. Nothing is totally free of course, albeit you can spare some time to do the exact stuff you need with the exact tools, and unlike windows and mac, you can have an all-purpose and specific-purpose FREE operating system if you wish, you can install multiple desktop environments, apart from the general purpose ones (GNOME, KDE) you can install some optimized for netbooks and old hardware (xfce, lxde, openbox, fluxbox).

Snow Leopard sucks too, it actually feels like a feature creep compared to leopard and tiger, a bit slower… but overall, is still a really sleek and resource efficient operating system, It also has it’s own malware and rootkits though and be appreciated, but is not as insecure as some people may think, anyway just in case I use a 3rd party firewall software. Remember that mac OSX is a blend of NeXtep and FreeBSD, so overall is technically a bit more solid than what windows is from it’s roots and Microsoft had to do all that duct-taping and make people spend 20GB of space to make a Windows 7 somehow a bit more robust.

The problem with MAC OSX is the same as with Windows when you get a fresh install, sometimes you have to look for third party applications for almost everything, but for some applications, this can be circumvented by downloading macports and fink, which may work like using the PORTS package management system from FreeBSD/PC-BSD.

And the Last but not least, the unknown giant, BSD. BSD is actually a very very robust operating system, Microsoft took some stuff from FreeBSD just to make Windows 7 a bit better.

Make a FreeBSD/PC-BSD/OpenBSD with a TrustedBSD combo and you have an almost invincible system in a network.

With FreeBSD/PC-BSD you can have an useful and very very solid system to work like an advanced linux one, for free. The downside is as same as the Linux one, but more remarkable because BSD was designed for critical missions in mind, and not for usability until very recently, and that’s something the PC-BSD project is trying to solve.

I’ve used Windows for 16 years and Linux/BSD/Mac systems for 5 years. I hope my rant is useful for you.

  17. Macsux says:

Mac:Hey PC what do you do for fun, do you make spreadsheets or something? I say this because I’m the cool guy and you are the nerd as the commercial show.

PC: Just playing some video games.

Mac: Oh really, oh, I have some too, which ones are you playing?

PC: Oh you know, ALL of them.

  18. Spartan 117 says:

And I have 20 reasons to not own a Mac

  19. Ghost says:

Really? Spring loaded folders is that amazing?

“Cut”, move to folder, “paste”. TA-DAH!

    Noobs are gonna hate.

And by the way, the best computer, ever, ever… It’s Alienware. Deal with it, neither a Mac nor a Windows will get as much as awesome as a Alien. It keeps being two steps ahead and three miles above.

  20. GhostBuster says:

Ghost lol all you got was a pretty looking dell lol. Alienware was nice up until 3-4 years ago I think. You payed the rip off price of a mac for a piece of C***.

  21. Huh says:

    What is a MAC?

  22. Just found it rather funny and want to point out that these are the *TOP* TEN reasons to buy a mac. And they’re not even good! I challenge someone to truthfully write TEN *GOOD* REASONS to buy a mac over a PC ….

  23. kevin balke says:

i just want to put in my one comment

    GO HOLOCAUST!!!!!

  24. Jim says:

Weak list. did you have to have 10?
#10 is the first and foremost why anyone buys a mac
#9 while true it’s still stilted towards PC’s especially for hardcore gaming
#8 is false. If you can’t figure out how to network on Windows 7 you might be in a coma.
#7 Wikipedia integration? what? this was a reach.
#6 This is True! Apple products in general play nicer with apple products. It’s as if they want you to only buy apple stuff…Weird.
#5 This bragging about a problem that macs had for years! Where the folders would just copy short cuts when you dragged them. this is a niche reason as well
#4 that’s true you can’t recover things easily on a mac. Wait… you can’t recover things easily. Anyone who’s had the rainbow of death kill their mac can attest to the perils of lost data. A trip to the genius bar will be in order and it won’t be cheap to recover and like it says No 3rd party software is available.
#3 this is true. You might run into issues with larger bad sectors on your hd though. It’s a different version of the same problem sometimes. OSX is pretty good about disk management though provided you aren’t doing too much heavy lifting.
#2 The virus debate is not a black and white issue. It’s like saying certain cars are less likely to wreck. While design plays into that it’s more often than not the fault of the driver. Computers are the exact same thing. Virus’s are written for maximum effectiveness. Macs rarely used at the enterprise level and their market share is not that high. Meaning why write a virus that doesn’t effect the majority of users.
#1 i-life is pretty easy to use but it’s also pretty stipped down. There is plenty of freeware that does everything ilife can do however it’s not under 1 program and it’s not stripped down. Movie editing for example. imovie blows. You have to get final cut to do any decent edits.

Like many have pointed out, Macs ARE easy to use. They come with limitations though. If you don’t mind the limitations and the price tag then it’s probably a good fit.

  25. antonis says:

LoL. people who like apple and support it are simple mentally handicapped.

  26. IAmAPC says:

-Stylish look? Ha! The magic of PCs is they can look any way I want them to. Sucks for mac users who don’t like porcelain white covered in glass.
-Growing amount of software? From zero? It had to start somewhere. Once again, still doesn’t compare. Growth does not equal superiority.
-Joining wireless networks? Well all I have to do is hit a button, how do you get simpler than that?
-Okay, I’ll give you the wikipedia integration. It makes such a big difference not to have to take 3 seconds to go to wikipedia.
-iPhone… surprise surprise, an Apple product intterfaces with another Apple product. Microsoft tech does it too.
-That feature where you can pop open folders while moving files and icons? That’s not exclusive, Windows 7 has it too. Now you’re REALLY grasping at straws.
-For #4 you once again forget the strength of a PC: if a feature isn’t boxed in with my PC, I can always DOWNLOAD it. And since Mac isn’t third-party friendly, that means an upgraded PC will always be more powerful than a Mac will ever be without emulating Windows OS.
-Defrag? Really? Refer to 4. I can tell my defrag software to activate daily, or to activate whenever it goes into sleep mode.
-Fewer viruses? Because hackers don’t trust Mac when programming, and simply don’t bother with Mac because of the SMALLER demographic.
-iLife? Well, you got me there. It’s a free version of Adobe Creative Suite. Free as in “makes up for the extra $300 my minimal spec Mac cost that could’ve been spent on a much better custom PC.” Sorry, all of Apple’s plusses are destroyed by their total lack of 3rd party support. Dollar for dollar, a PC gives you more horsepower and room for improvement.

  27. Elena says:

#1 reason to buy PC over MAC: price.

  28. killernerd says:

    10. Sleek & Stylish
i personally do not like the look of macs, i only like their iphones. They look nice. So that’s really a personal preference

    9. Increasing Number of Software
Even now there is still alot more support for windows than for mac

    8. Simpler WIreless Networking
    i kindly disagree

    7. Wikipedia Integration
Not a good idea… Wikipedia is written by everyday people like you and me. It’s riddled with errors and mistakes. I don’t trust it one bit as an informational source.

    6. iPhone
That’s assuming you already have an iphone or are planning to get one. Not a reason to choose mac over pc…

    5. Spring loaded Folders
Looking at the demo vid, it doesn’t seem all that smooth. You have to hover the file over the icon for about 2 seconds before it opens. I would be alot faster by clicking, control+x, browsing to the correct folder and control+c.

    4. No need for file shredders
Not really sure what to say here. I would personally find it a disadvantage if every bit of information would be physically deleted from the harddrive since it would make restoring data impossible.
That and it also saves alot of time if you just let the info sit on the hdd.

    3. No HD fragmentation
I must say that win7 does a pretty neat job at keeping fragmentation at bay. Once a month i scan my hdd’s for fragmentation and the result is always 0% fragmentation. So win7 either does the same or defragments the hdd’s every once in a while in such manner that you won’t notice since it only needs to defragment a small part.

    2. Fewer Viruses
aah yes, the eternal “we don’t have viruses” arguement. Mark my words, when mac gains a bigger importance in the market it will get targeted more.
right now there are little to no viruses because no-one makes any, why would they? pc users have, what? 80% of the market? (don’t know the actual number but i think it’s close to that) So why target mac if you can hit so many more?
And believe me when i say that, when this happens, apple probably won’t be ready for it
    .
    1. iLife
I don’t really know how this would be THE NUMBAH 1 reason to use a mac over a pc. Every program a mac has also has a counterpart (or 5) for the pc which do the job just as well with just as many features.

I must say this was an amusing read allthough it hardly had any real arguements. I had the feeling it was more opinion/malinformation than real facts.

Not hating mac-users though, macs are great machines. I just can’t stand fanboys (from either side)
