The M24 Sniper’s Weapon System (SWS) represents a return to bolt action sniper rifles by the US Army. As in the USMC M40A1, the M24 uses the Remington 700 action, although the reciever is a long action made for adaptation to take the .300 Winchester Magnum round. The stock (HS Precision) is made of a composite of Kevlar, graphite and fibreglass bound together with epoxy resins, and features an aluminium bedding block and adjustable butt plate. A detachable bipod (Harris) can be attached to the stocks fore-end. The metal finish is powder coated for extreme durability
The rifle had a very quick development cycle as the US Army had decided it wanted to get snipers back into the US Army and was in the process of developing the B4 identifier and the school to award it. There was a major short fall of M21′s which was the standard sniper rifle at that point of time and the Army figured it would need 10,000 sniper rifles of which they didn’t have nearly that many M21′s. So a new sniper rifle was developed at the same time and it was done in a record 22 months. The Weapon System Matrix Manager for the M24 was Major John Mende and he explains that the long action actually had nothing to do with the ability to convert to a .300 Win Mag but was a product of that quick development time. The rifle was intended to be chambered in the .30-06 as the -06 was a type classified munition for the Army unlike the .300 WM at the time. They wanted to have a high power load for the .30-06 eventually developed. As development of the system was moving forward they discovered that there was not enough .30-06 ammo in a single lot in the Army’s inventory to test and develop the system so they quickly changed to the 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Win) and left the action the same as there was not enough time for the manufacturers of the stock and floorplate to make the change to short action. They also fully believed they would later do a product improvement update and convert all the M24′s to .30-06. The fact that they could convert them to .300 Win Mag was an unexpected benefit to the SF groups and was never actually designed into the system.

Anti-material rifles are similar in form and appearance to modern sniper rifles and can often serve in that role, though they are usually chambered for cartridges more powerful than are normally required for neutralizing an enemy combatant and can operate at a greater range. Therefore, anti-material rifles do fall in Top Sniper Rifles List and we have put 3 of Anti-material rifles in list.
The offensive use of anti-materiel rifles or Special Application Sniper Rifles (SASR) is termed Hard Target Interdiction (HTI) by the United States military.

“Anti-Material Rifle” = big sniper rifle… and the obsessives who think that matters can be safely ignored.
first off, anti-material rifles, while they are technically “sniper” rifles, are generally used for equipment and not personnel. Second off, bigger does not always mean better. I would much rather settle for a rifle with greater accuracy and penetrating power or range, rather than just large caliber. (larger rounds suffer more affects from the wind than smaller rounds with higher velocity.) So I believe this list is well comprised of the top ten sniper rifles in existence. On a personal note, I am very familiar with the M-24, but have fallen for the PSG1.:)
Well, I’m pretty sure that this is just ‘my 10 favourite sniper rifles’.It mainly talks about british and american snipers, while there are other(some even better) snipers/anti material rifles around like the hungarian Gepard M1-M6 or the croatian RT-20.
@Hartmann; I do not think hungarian Gepard M1-M6 or the croatian RT-20 will fall in top 10 rifles. Earlier versions of Gepard were single shot and manual reload which puts them out of scene as “Modren warfare rifles”. However this changed in later versions. Currently, the biggest problem with Gepards is their large weight which means low mobility.
The RT-20 is a Croatian anti-materiel sniper rifle developed by RH-Alan in the mid-1990s. This gun does not compete with listed guns in accuracy and reliability. Above all, these rifles have never emerged as successful sniper rifles in battlefield. I hope it gives you an insight as to why they do not fall in top 10 sniper rifle list.

Some of your choices would not have been on my list, if I made one. First off the McMillan TAC 50 is the worlds record holder for the longest combat kill shot, so in my opinion that should be #1. Secondly the Barret? cmon that thing is so obsolete it’s just not funny. Semi auto sniper rifels are useless comppared to bolt actions. They have to many moving parts that move durring firing. A sniper rarely fires more than one or two follow up shots before he has to get up and move. They still teach “One shot, one kill”.

You can’t compare an AMW to a regular .308 or .338, they were built for different purposes, it’s like comparing a 9mm pistol to a slingshot, sure they both hit a target but fuck me one tears a person apart and the other kills him.

The cheytac m200 intervention is the best sniper rifle. It can shoot way further then the l115a3. It also has more stopping power then the l115a3.
