Nokia sues Apple over use of Patented Tech in iPhone’s

12a968d6c649150d12907a03ca778cfd Nokia sues Apple over use of Patented Tech in iPhones The cell phone maker has alleged that Apple has violated ten patents owned by Nokia. Specifically, the company claims ownership of technology relating to the Global System for Mobile communications, or GSM; wireless local area network, or WLAN; and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, or UMTS.

In a press release, the world’s largest cell phone manufacturer said it has invested more than 40 billion Euros in research into research and development in the last two decades, earning it one of the “strongest and broadest patent portfolios in the industry.” Nokia said it has entered into license agreements with about 40 companies for these patents.

“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president of Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia. “Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.”

The ten patents relate to devices compatible with GSM, UTMS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards, and cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption. Nokia has alleged that all iPhone models released since 2007 infringe on these patents.

Good thing that there weren’t as many patent lawyers in the 19th century. We’d still be riding on horses.

this patent crap has got to stop. It is one thing to get economic rewards for work, but in this case, it isa clear attempt to stifle competition.

what if AT&T invoked patents on using the Telephone as a communication device? This is stupid. Fair use shoudl apply after a time. People want to work once and get paid in perpetuity.

Just like music. I am all for getitng paid to work, but how many times should somebody get paid for their songs?

We need to either train our lawyers in something other than profesional lying, or fundamentally revamp the legal industry.

Lets get real, the healthcare “crisis” really is all about Tort Law, and hospitals charging confiscatory prices for their services.

All boils down to Lawyers making money on other peoples work.

IF a Lawyer had to pay other lawyers for the rights to use their legal cases as precedent, I think we’d see a lot less legal wrangling.

BTW – these things are generally done to exploit FUD in the market (Microsoft is King of this)

Look at the SCO thing, non story, wasn’t true, but did affect LINUX sales for several years, and buy time for bloatware Microsoft Windows Vista (time saver and hardware upgrade enforcer) and Windows 7. Vista also relieved Microsoft from having to provide a direct upgrade path for XP, and only incorporate Vista (significantly less u# of users and work.

  2. I Have been buying NOKIA products since 1983. Nokia always leaded the industry in my eyes with cellphones and applications for them. I Have noticed many simular functions in my girlfriends apple iphone that originated from nokia’s cellphones and operating systems in them. NOKIA should win this civil suite with no complications. In all actuality. Many of our American products are duplicated from other countries. Just revealing a TRUE fact, i know you do not want this written. So What!

  3. p.s.- The problem with many of us is we do not want or even give credit to the originator of the idea. We just take it like we have done our UNITED STATES. LOL!
